You apply, work the shift, get paid directly by the venue, and rate each other afterwards. No fixed schedule, no commitment beyond the shift you accept.

How are casual shifts different from permanent jobs on this platform?

Permanent jobs are full-time or part-time career roles with an ongoing employment relationship. Casual shifts are one-off or infrequent bookings paid per shift, with no continuing relationship between you and the venue unless you both arrange another. You can do both on Shift Happens — a permanent role as your main income plus casual shifts on your days off is a common hybrid pattern.

Who pays me for casual shifts?

Accepted Answer

The venue pays you directly, by whatever method you agree — bank transfer, FPS, or cash on the night. Shift Happens does not hold, collect, or disburse wages; we connect workers to venues, we are not your employer. Because most casual shifts are short engagements, MPF contributions typically do not apply under the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Ordinance's casual-employee rules (currently the 60-day threshold); confirm with each venue if you are unsure.

How does the ratings system work?

After every completed shift, both you and the venue rate each other on a 5-star scale with an optional short comment. Ratings are visible to employers considering you for future shifts and to workers considering future jobs at the venue. If a rating contains a personal attack, discriminatory language, or commercially sensitive information, you can dispute it via support@shifthappens.app within 14 days of posting — after that the rating becomes permanent.

What is the 468-hour rule?

Under the Hong Kong Employment Ordinance, working 468 hours or more with the same employer over a continuous 3-month period triggers the continuous-contract threshold and certain statutory rights (paid annual leave, sickness allowance, severance pay). Shift Happens tracks your rolling hours with each venue and warns you before you approach the threshold. Non-permanent-resident workers should note that the 468-hour question also interacts with visa conditions — check your work permit terms before accumulating hours across venues. Do I need to download an app to apply for shifts?

Accepted Answer

No — apply, manage, and work your shifts entirely from the web. shifthappens.app is fully functional on desktop and mobile browsers today. A dedicated Shift Happens worker app is in development; sign up for the email list on the ForCandidates page to be notified when it launches.

Can I cancel a shift after accepting?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but with a 12-hour courtesy window: workers should give at least 12 hours' notice before the shift start time. Cancellations inside that window, or no-shows, are flagged on your rating history. Venues cancelling the shift entirely can do so up to 24 hours before start time without penalty; inside that 24-hour window they are expected to compensate workers who have already accepted.

How do employers post shifts?

Venues use the ShiftCMS employer dashboard at shifthappens.app to post shifts — set the date, time, location, hourly rate, skills required, and number of workers needed. Posts are instant with no approval queue. Applicants, AI match scores, reliability ratings, and 468-hour compliance status are all shown at a glance. Every ShiftCMS subscription tier includes shift posting; there is no separate per-shift quota.
